Go With Your Gut: Lessons From the Shop Floor

By Randolph Trussler

Years ago, while working in a tool and die shop, a massive press went down. It was a critical piece of equipment — the kind of breakdown that stops everything. Together, we went through all the details and every possible scenario, eventually identifying a likely cause: a pin had sheared internally inside the machine.

The situation was tough — there was no way to know for sure until the machine was torn apart, an expensive and time-consuming decision. But with careful consideration and trust in our combined judgment, the decision was made to move forward.

In the end, the pin was sheared.

That experience left a lasting lesson for the team: always forward, never backwards. Be courageous — you’ll never know until you step in.

Don’t stand on the sidelines. Trust your gut, act decisively, and learn together. That’s how teams grow, lead, and succeed.

Key Lessons:

  • Trust combined experience and instincts when making difficult decisions.
  • Step in courageously even when certainty is impossible.
  • Team collaboration amplifies judgment and drives better outcomes.

Takeaway:

Gut instincts, guided by experience and teamwork, turn uncertainty into action — and action into growth.
