I recently returned from a business trip over the Christmas period in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, working at the Veritas plant on a Stellantis program. My task was to help resolve persistent issues on a specific part affecting performance and consistency.
Reality in office, or on the shop floor is rarely straightforward. Long days, high expectations, and production pressure quickly add up. After nearly two weeks, I reached a low point in my own tolerance. I was worn down, and my problem-solving edge had dulled.
During a technical discussion with the Global Project Engineer, I crossed a line. I was unprofessional and rude.
The Global Project Engineer immediately called me out on my behavior. Calm and direct, he made it clear that my conduct was unacceptable without raising his voice or escalating the situation. I felt embarrassed and foolish, but I knew he was right.
The shop floor teaches many lessons about tolerances, repeatability, and process discipline. But this experience reinforced a different kind of standard—one that is just as critical. Excellence is not limited to design quality, tooling robustness, or process capability. It extends to personal conduct, respect, and self-control, especially under pressure.
The pursuit of excellence means holding yourself accountable, even when you are tired, frustrated, or far from home. It means recognizing when you fall short, owning it, and committing to do better.
I will not forget this lesson. Going forward, I will hold myself to a higher standard—not only in engineering judgment but in behavior. That is my ongoing pursuit of excellence, and it starts on the shop floor.
Takeaway
Focus on the project SIGNAL and leave out the noise. Keep it SMART, simple, and always hold YOURSELF to the Pursuit of Excellence.
